After.Life (2009)

AFTER.LIFE (2009) – Life is the symptom. Death is the cure. Following a terrible car crash, a woman awakes to find an enigmatic mortician preparing her for burial. After a horrific car crash, a young teacher awakes on a mortuary slab. The funeral director convinces her she is not alive but transitioning into the spirit world. Is he telling the truth? Young couple Paul and Anna are toying with the prospect of marriage when they have a chance encounter with Eliot, a mysterious undertaker who claims he can speak with the dead. When Anna becomes caught in the otherworldly realm between life and death, she risks being buried alive. Will Eliot help her, or is he being driven by darker motivations? After a horrible car accident, Anna wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon preparing her body for her funeral. Confused, terrified and feeling still very much alive, Anna doesn’t believe she’s dead, despite the funeral director’s reassurances that she is merely in transition to the afterlife. Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna’s grief-stricken boyfriend Paul can’t shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn’t what he appears to be. As the funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth, but it could be too late. Anna may have already begun to cross to the other side.
After.Life is a smart little horror-thriller with a pretty original hook: An undertaker who can talk to the recently deceased corpses on his slabs. But is he a malevolent force trying to doom people whose lives have yet to fully run their course, or does he just have a gift fir talking to departed souls, who trust him because they’re understandably terrified by their new circumstances? Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo smartly walks this line throughout, giving Liam Neeson’s character a sinister edge, but stopping short of defining him as an out-and-out villain. The story really has to do with the struggles of the protagonist, Anna (Christina Ricci), to determine what’s real and what isn’t – what parts of the funeral home in which she’s confined can she actually manipulate, and what parts are only in her imagination. Again, Wojtowics-Vosloo is reluctant to give concrete answers and she heightens the tension by getting excellent camerawork and editing from her team. The visuals in After.Life really pop and Ricci complements that aesthetic scheme. With her big, haunted eyes, her gaunt frame and her sallow complexion, it’s like she was born to play a corpse. This is by no means a backhanded compliment, because she gives the character true pathos and expertly dramatizes the panic and fear a body would feel in that kind of purgatory. Justin Long is also a good choice as her fiancée, sinking his teeth into some dramatic work that suits him well. Sine After.Life is all about mood and atmosphere, it’s worth mentioning another performer who contributes – namely, Celia Weston as Anna’s wheelchair -bound mother. She simply drips with a moribund contempt for Long’s character, believing he contributed to the premature end of her estranged daughter’s life. An underdog gem, After.Life announces Wojtowicz-Vosloo as a filmmaker to watch.
Eliot Deacon owns a funeral parlor and talks softly to the corpses he prepares for burial. Middle school teacher Anna Taylor attends the funeral of her piano teacher where she meets Eliot. That night Anna argues with her boyfriend Paul at a restaurant. She drives off in a state of distress and has a traffic accident. She awakens on an exam table in the funeral parlor to find the funeral director, Eliot, cutting off her clothes and telling her she has died. He tells Anna he has a gift that he can hear the dead. Eliot has a collection of photographs of corpses whom he helped “make the transition”. Eliot injects Anna regularly with a fictional drug called hydronium brombide to “relax the muscles and keep rigor mortis from settling in.” Paul asks to see Anna’s body but Eliot does not allow it on the grounds he is not family. Anna unsuccessfully attempts to escape several times. Eliot tells her she must let go of life as she had not really been living anyway. Eventually, Anna escapes and finds a room with a phone where she reaches Paul, who hangs up thinking it’s a prank. Anna comes to believe she has actually died when Eliot lets her see her corpse-like self in a mirror. One of Anna’s students sees her and alerts Paul, who begins to suspect she is still alive.
Anna’s student visits the funeral parlor and Eliot tells him that they share a gift, the same as Jesus, who raised Lazarus and he offers to teach the boy more. The boy accepts is seen burying a live chick in a box. During the final preparation for the funeral, Anna asks to see herself one last time. Eliot holds up a small mirror and while she stares at herself she notices her breath condensing on the glass and accuses Eliot of having lied to her about her being dead. Eliot injects her one last time and she slip into unconsciousness. At the funeral, Paul places the engagement ring he intended to give her the night of the crash on her finger. After the funeral, Paul drinks heavily and behaves aggressively with Eliot, who seems to taunt him and encourage him to see for himself that Anna is really dead, telling him there is not much time. Meanwhile, Anna is shown awakening to the sound of earth being shoveled onto her coffin. She cries out and desperately scratches the satin lining of her coffin lid. Driving under the influence of alcohol, Paul rushes to the cemetery. They are shown embracing and Anna tells Paul she has always loved him. Paul asks what the odd sound is that he hears and Anna explains it is the sound of Eliot’s gloves and scissors on the table as he prepares Paul’s body. A moment later, he finds himself in the funeral parlor with Eliot standing over him preparing his body as he did Anna’s. Eliot tells him that he never made it to the cemetery due to a car accident which killed him. Paul protests that he is alive until the moment Eliot inserts a trocar deep into his torso.

Brent follows him and they find the boat has been sunk, but Brent is able to retrieve the gun anyway. Noticing a nearby axe, Carlos runs to get it, but is caught in a giant bear trap. Brent begins to help him, however after hearing someone approach from the trees nearby he leaves Carlos and returns to the house, telling the others that Carlos has been killed.
While Freddy begins to become hysterical over their situation, bandaged up Carlos makes it to the house. Although barely conscious, is able to tell Jennifer that Brent had left him. Jennifer manages to knock the gun out of Brent’s hand and gives it to Michael, no longer trusting Brent. The group decides they have to try and leave in the van in order to get Carlos to a hospital despite Brent’s protests and expectation that the van will be rigged to explode. Alex leaves the house and successfully brings the van to the front of the house, allowing everyone to get in. However, while driving away from the house, road spikes blow all of the tires. The unnamed man quickly shoots rigged balloons of gasoline which spill over the van before telling the group that there is no escape and they need to sacrifice one person in the next 60 seconds or they will all be burned alive. Brent pushes the wounded Carlos out of the van where he is shot in the head.
The group panics. Brent deserts Amber by running into the forest, leaving her to return to the house with Michael, Jennifer and Freddy. Alex attempts to escape on her motorbike however is nearly shot when attempting to do so, instead fleeing towards the lake. While Brent runs through the forest he is attacked by the killer, only spared due to his promise to kill someone else. Brent then attacks Alex, drowning her in the lake. He quickly returns to the house and convinces Freddy to get the gun off of Michael by lying to him saying that they could both escape on the boat. Freddy retrieves the gun from Michael but eventually shoots Brent after realizing he was lying about the boat and was going to shoot everyone. Freddy then forces Amber to leave the house before attempting to do the same to Michael and Jennifer. Michael tries to reason with the hysterical Freddy, but Brent soon stabs Freddy through the head with a fire poker, having survived being shot. Michael and Jennifer run into the basement but are then cornered by Brent. As Brent prepares to shoot them both, Amber returns and bludgeons him to death with a spade. Michael and Jennifer go back upstairs, leaving Amber in shock in the basement. Eventually she finds a gun planted by the killer in her bag and reluctantly draws it on Jennifer who has the other gun. The two girls get into an argument over Michael, with Amber confessing her love for him. Jennifer shoots Amber in the stomach, much to Michael’s shock.
Realizing it is nearly 6am and the killer is approaching the house, Michael and Jennifer escape into the basement with an unconscious Amber. In the basement they hide out and attempt to shoot the killer when he comes downstairs, however it is revealed to be Alex, having survived her attack from Brent earlier. Alex quickly dies from the gunshot wound before Jennifer turns on Michael in desperation, stabbing him in the stomach. Michael tells Jennifer he would have died for her, but before she can kill him Amber attacks Jennifer and strangles her to death. Amber crawls next to Michael, intent on staying with him until the end. As the clock chimes six and the man approaches, Michael kills himself in order to save Amber. As the man passes, Amber says she’ll never like him and though he expresses skepticism, he leaves her alive and departs from the house. The killer leaves a voice mail at the psychiatrist’s office, saying he’s proved his theory that desperate people would resort to murder and the camera pans along a photograph to reveal Brent was the doctor’s son. The killer laughs and says he’s now found closure.

B13 (YAVARUM NALAM) (2009)
Fear has a new address. Manohar, an upwardly mobile middle-class Indian moves into a new apartment – 13B on the 13th floor with his family. From the first day in their new home, the women are hooked on to a new TV show “Sab Khairiyat”. The show is about a family eerily similar to theirs who have also just moved into a new house. As t he TV show unfolds, all the incidents that happen in the show start happening to them. Director Vikram explores the possibilities for terror when the television becomes aware of the power it holds over the average family and decides that it’s time to take control. In a world that never sleeps, the only source of relaxation for many is the household television. Previously just another appliance like the refrigerator or oven, the television of the 21st Century is thought by many to reveal the hierarchy of the family; whoever controls the television remote controls the family. But what happens when the television becomes sentient and decides that it’s time for a change? This is what happens to Manohar and his family upon moving into their new home at 13B. Realizing to his horror that their television has stopped showing them the facts and has started showing them the things that it wants them to see. Manohar must race to save his family from becoming unfortunate victims of the digital age.
Manohar (R. Madhavan) moves into a new apartment, 13B, on the 13th floor with his family, fulfilling his life’s biggest dream. But they encounter a series of small but strange incidents (such as milk getting spoiled), which are regarded as inauspicious by his family but shrugged off by an excited Manohar. The elevator in the apartment works for everyone in the building except Manohar, which bothers him. The women in the family get hooked onto a new TV show Yavarum Nalam (Everyone Is Well or Sab Khairiyat in Hindi). The show is about a family eerily similar to Manohar’s who have also just moved into a new house as they have. As the serial unfolds, Manohar notices that the incidents that happen in the serial are a reflection of what is happening to his family. One day Manohar finds the blind man’s dog trying to find something in the sand, Manohar stops the dog and takes it to its owner He also notices that his camera takes distorted pictures of him while he is in the apartment, but not while he is outside the apartment. Things like his sister graduating, his wife getting pregnant and later suffering a miscarriage are all also shown in the serial. Priya is saved by their longtime family friend and doctor, Dr. Balu. The rest of the family remains oblivious to the similarities and Manohar prefers it that way to avoid panic.
Things start taking a turn for the worse in the serial and Manohar becomes terrified that the same might happen to his family. He now wants to know who is behind the making of the TV show. Later that night he asks his wife about the latest episode of the serial, she reveals the same story to him. On this, Manohar digs the ground on a rainy evening and finds a diary. He then unravels a terrifying secret: The apartment they live in shared their address with a house where a family of eight (similar to Manohar’s family) was butchered back in 1977. It was the family of a TV news anchor named Chitra. On the day of Chitra’s engagement, an ardent fan (Shriram Shinde in the 13B version) of Chitra wanted to stop the engagement and failed in doing so. Disheartened, he committed suicide. Subsequently, all members of Chitra’s family were murdered with a hammer in a single day. The blame rested on the lunatic brother in the family, as he had been seen with the hammer last. The police officer investigating the case also committed suicide by hanging himself in the same house. Manohar and his policeman friend Shiva meet the madman brother Senthil, who apparently goes crazy after seeing a TV show in an asylum. They then meet Chitra’s former fiancée Ramchandar, who tried to plead for Senthil’s innocence because he got covered in blood while he hugged the bodies of his family. After researching one night, Manohar has a nightmare of the 13B murderer climbing the stairs to kill his family. When Manohar tries to climb the stairs, he always ends up on the 2nd floor. He goes to the hall and witnesses the climax of Yavarum Nalam when they are showing the murderer’s identity: Manohar’s face is shown as the killer.
What follows is the climax: The 13B murderer is Dr. Balu (Sachin Khedekar), who sees the family members’ faces as the serial family members. It was he who killed them in the 1970s on behalf of his brother, the spurned fan and also killed the police officer who caught him red-handed. Manohar kills Dr. Balu. The story ends with Manohar living a normal life with a new dog in the family; the milk is not getting spoiled anymore. They bring Senthil home and the lift in the apartment finally works for Manohar. The next day, when Manohar uses the lift, he receives a call from Dr. Balu, who says that while the 13B family haunts the TV, he haunts Manohar’s phone. The lift falls down quickly, ending the movie.
In today’s world, the major source of relief, information and entertainment is the TV. So much so, that it has moved up from its modest position of being just another “household appliance” to actually determining the power equation in a family. It is easy to identify the hierarchy in the family depending on who controls the remote control. So, what happens when the TV realizes this power and begins to take control? What happens when instead of showing you the facts, the TV, begins to show you what it wants you to see? What happens when Manohar, to his great horror, realizes that this is exactly what is happening with his wonderful family, who has just moved into their sweet new home at 13B. Manohar’s dream condominium transforms into a house of horrors when a show on his brand new television starts depicting his demise. A series of strange events plagues Manohar’s family with a remote control hell bent on being just that – in control.

But 17-year-old Daniel Austin gets none of that because his obsessive online stalking of his classmate and crush, Mona Wilson, got him put on house arrest for the whole summer. So, no cell phone, no Internet, no leaving the property, and especially no Mona. Then Daniel’s single mother has to go on a long business trip and Daniel has the place to himself. Daniel figures out a way to piggyback onto his neighbor’s; wireless signal and believing he’s surfing off the grid, uses his time to check in on his friends and Mona. But when Daniel didn’t expect is for Mona to check up on him. And what she does next shakes him to the very core. And then things start to happen. Daniel receives mysterious packages in the mail, hears phantom noises, sees inanimate objects move and feels a strange presence in the house. Dark Summer is highly original twist on the supernatural summer season terror. Daniel Austin, 17, has been placed under house arrest for stalking classmate Mona Wilson and hacking into all of her accounts and social media. Under the terms of his house arrest, he is not allowed visits from unaccompanied minors nor is he allowed access to his computer (which has been confiscated by the authorities) or the Internet. His I.P. address has been tagged so as to alert authorities if he attempts to access any social media. As his mother is away on business, he alone in the house. Daniel’s parole officer, Stokes explains that Daniel’s monitoring tag will go off if he goes past the edge of the front lawn. If he does not retreat within five seconds, he will be arrested. Daniel mentions hearing of someone under house arrest who cut off their foot to get the monitoring tag off so they could flee to Mexico. Despite the restrictions placed on Daniel, his friends Abby Feller and Kevin Dowdle visit and bring him a tablet so that he can access a neighbor’s Internet connection and Skype his mother. As the three converse by the pool, it is rather clear that Abby has a crush om her friend Daniel. Daniel explains that he wasn’t interested in Mona but then developed an obsession – virtually overnight. When he is about to Skype his mother, Abby contacts him instead. After a brief conversation, he receives an incoming Skype call from Mona Wilson, who kills herself on camera. Following this incident, Daniel becomes more and more paranoid and keeps seeing Mona in the house. Daniel and his friends attempt a séance to contact the spirit of Mona. The idea is that by each holding pens, Mona will communicate with them. Instead, Daniel and Kevin stab Abby through the hand with their pens. She is then lifted up and dragged across the wall. Afterwards, we see the blood from her injured hand spells out “Daniel” on the wall. After more supernatural events, Abby and Kevin head over to the dead girl’s house. They are looking for a personal item of Mona’s they can use as part of a ritual to help her move on to the afterlife. When they arrive at the house, they find it empty. They break in and guided by Daniel who has a blueprint of the house, they head to Mona’s room which is bare apart from a blood-stained mattress (from Mona shooting herself). They realize with Daniel’s help, that there is a false wall at the back of a closet which leads to a secret room which contains a number of strange artifacts and a large number of photos of Daniel. Mona was stalking Daniel, not the other way around. One of the items they find has a strange symbol embossed on it. Daniel finds out what it is and uses the name of the symbol as the password to Mona’s cloud account. There he finds a folder called “Daniel” which contains a spell. It turns out that Mona secretly had a crush on Daniel and had been obsessively stalking him for a long time. She put a spell om Daniel to make him fall in love with her. It worked, but he was too shy to contact her, so Mona used a second spell so that her spirit could enter into Daniel’s body alongside his own spirit so they would be together. There are five steps to the spell, the first of which was Mona’s suicide. They realize that if all the steps are not completed by Daniel, the spell will fail. Abby therefore takes the last step, hoping that this will break the spell. However, Abby has already unwittingly carried out the previous steps of the spell so performing the last step brings Mona’s spirit into her body. While they are cleaning up after the failed séance, Abby kills Kevin and then cuts off Daniels leg so she can remove his house arrest monitor and abduct him without notice. When Stokes visits, he sees the severed leg on the floor and just thinks Daniel has absconded, as he described when he was first fitted with the tag. In a post-credits scene, Abby still possessed by Mona’s spirit, is seen driving Daniel out of town while he lets out muffled screams.
